Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Alumni networks play a crucial role in fostering connections between former students, promoting professional growth, and supporting educational institutions. With the rise of social media, alumni networks have become more accessible and dynamic. In Gboko Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp have been used by educational institutions to build and maintain connections with former students. These platforms provide a space for alumni to share career opportunities, collaborate on projects, and support their alma mater. However, while social media has made alumni networking easier, it remains unclear how these platforms influence the quality of relationships, engagement, and the overall success of alumni networks in Gboko. This study seeks to investigate the impact of social media on alumni networking in Gboko, focusing on how social media platforms facilitate communication, professional development, and institutional support.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although social media has significantly transformed how alumni networks operate, there is limited research on how these platforms specifically affect alumni engagement in Gboko. While many alumni use social media to stay connected, the extent to which these platforms contribute to building meaningful professional relationships, supporting alumni-led initiatives, and enhancing institutional growth remains unexplored. This study aims to assess the impact of social media platforms on alumni networking in Gboko, Benue State, and to understand the challenges and opportunities they present.
